What shipping really adds to a blueprint order: flat rate vs carrier rate vs a free-shipping membership

The per-sheet price is what shops advertise. Shipping is what changes the total. Online printers handle it three different ways, and which one is cheapest depends on how you order.

The three models

Flat rate with a free threshold. Ours: $15 UPS Ground on any order under $100, free at $100 and up. No surcharges. The invoice is the sheet price plus either $15 or $0.

Carrier rate at checkout. The shop passes through what UPS or FedEx charges for the box. For a rolled tube within the Northeast that’s typically $12–$25 by Ground; more for larger tubes, longer distances, or residential delivery surcharges. Plans4Less and most other online printers work this way.

Paid membership. Plans4Less PRIME is $95 a year for free shipping on every order. Worth it if you ship many small orders; not if you mostly ship full sets.

The annual view

Assume a small firm places three orders a month. What it pays in shipping over a year:

If you mostly order full sets, a flat-with-free-threshold model costs nothing and there’s no membership to remember to renew. If you fire off lots of small orders, a membership pays — or you change how you order.

The batching rule

Hold the small stuff until something big goes out. The 6-sheet reprint for the electrician and the two half-size sets for the owner ship free if they ride along with Thursday’s permit submission; they cost $15 each if they go out alone on Tuesday and Wednesday. Most firms can batch to one or two orders a week without anyone noticing, and at that point almost everything ships free.

For deadline reprints that can’t wait, $15 is still less than the drive to a FedEx Office and back, and a lot less than the $6.99-a-sheet you’d pay once you got there.

Next Day Air

UPS Next Day Air is $45 flat for the first address, $45 per additional address. You only need it outside our next-day Ground zone — New England, Virginia and south, western Pennsylvania, anywhere west — and only when the deadline is tomorrow. Inside New Jersey, NYC, Long Island, eastern PA, Delaware, and most of Maryland, Ground from Cape May County is already next business day, so don’t pay for air.

What’s not on the invoice
