Blueprint printing pricing questions, answered with real numbers

A single ARCH D (24×36) sheet in black-and-white on 20# bond is $2.00 at East Coast Blueprints. There is no minimum order, no setup fee, and no per-file charge, so the sheet price is the sheet price. Shipping is the only other line: $15 flat UPS Ground, which for a one-sheet order makes the delivered total $17.00.

The same sheet at a big-box counter runs $4.50 at Staples and $6.99 at FedEx Office as of September 2026, and there you'd drive to pick it up. Plans4Less publishes $1.75 plus carrier shipping. A local reprographics shop typically lands between $2.50 and $5.00, sometimes with a $10–$25 minimum order that makes a single sheet cost more than the sheet.

The honest read: for exactly one sheet, the shipping charge dominates and a walk-in counter may be cheaper if one is nearby. The per-sheet gap starts mattering at 6–8 sheets, and by a full set it is decisive.

This is the most common order we see: a residential or small-commercial permit set, 24 ARCH D sheets, three copies (two for the construction office, one for the file). That's 72 sheets, which crosses our 25-sheet volume threshold, so 10% comes off automatically.

The math: 72 × $2.00 = $144.00, minus $14.40 volume discount = $129.60. Because that clears $100, UPS Ground is free — $129.60 delivered. Add stapling ($0.50 per set) and it's $131.10. Add accordion folding to 8.5×11 ($0.50 per sheet) and it's $165.60.

At FedEx Office the same 72 sheets are $503.28 before any finishing. At Staples, $324.00. Plans4Less comes to $126.00 on paper before shipping, which for a 72-sheet flat or rolled order will be somewhere in the $15–$30 range, so their delivered price is roughly even with ours or slightly above.

A local repro shop at $3.00–$4.00 a sheet lands at $216–$288 plus whatever they charge for delivery, or your time picking it up.

Online, by a wide margin, for anything beyond a couple of sheets. FedEx Office's large-format pricing as of September 2026 is $4.99 for ARCH C, $6.99 for ARCH D, and $11.99 for ARCH E in black-and-white, and it varies by location because there's no national rate card. Ours is $1.25 / $2.00 / $3.50. That is a 3.5× difference on ARCH D and 3.4× on ARCH E.

What FedEx Office gives you for that premium is walk-in immediacy: you can have a sheet in hand in an hour if the store's plotter is free and the file behaves. That is worth paying for when you need one sheet right now. It is not worth paying for on a Monday permit set that needs to be in Trenton Wednesday, because our noon-ET cutoff and next-day UPS Ground to New Jersey gets it there Tuesday for a fraction of the cost.

The other hidden cost at a counter is your time. A 24-sheet set at FedEx is typically two trips (drop off, pick up) or a wait. An online order is five minutes at your desk and the box shows up.

Staples' Print & Marketing counter quotes around $4.50 per ARCH D sheet in black-and-white as of September 2026, though it changes by region and by whether an associate applies a promotion. That's cheaper than FedEx Office and more than double our $2.00. Staples also does not stock every size at every store: 30×42 engineering sheets and ARCH E are often "we'll send it out," which turns a same-day walk-in into a two-to-three-day wait anyway.

On a 24-sheet set, Staples is $108 and we're $48 plus $15 shipping ($63 delivered). On three copies of that set, Staples is $324 and we're $129.60 delivered with free shipping. Staples finishing (folding, binding) is quoted at the counter and usually adds $1–$2 per sheet for folding; ours is $0.50 per sheet.

Where Staples is fine: you have one or two letter-size or ledger-size sheets and a store around the corner. Where it isn't: any real plan set, any color work, any engineering size.

Because on most Northeast orders you won't actually pay more, and on the ones where you do, you're buying something. Here's the honest version.

Where they're cheaper: per-sheet on ARCH D, $1.75 vs our $2.00. On color, meaningfully cheaper: $3.75 vs our $6.00. If you run color-heavy work in volume, look hard at them.

Where the delivered price evens out: shipping. We ship free over $100 on Ground, $15 flat under. Plans4Less charges carrier rates at checkout unless you buy their PRIME membership ($95 a year). On a 72-sheet permit set, they're $126 plus shipping; we're $129.60 shipped. On a 24-sheet single set they're $42 plus shipping and we're $63 shipped — they likely win that one by a few dollars.

Where we win outright: the cutoff (noon ET vs their published 11 AM), and geography. We're in Cape May County, NJ; UPS Ground from here is next business day to all of New Jersey, NYC, Long Island, eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and most of Maryland. That same-day-print, next-day-Ground combination is the whole reason to use an online shop for deadline work, and it depends on where the plotter physically is.

Run both carts with your real order. For a large, flexible, far-away B&W order, they may edge us and we'll say so. For NJ/NY/PA firms with real deadlines, the 25¢ buys you a later cutoff and a day off the transit.

Full color on ARCH D is $6.00 per sheet here — three times black-and-white. ARCH C color is $4.00, ARCH E is $9.00, and 30×42 is $8.00. Plans4Less publishes $3.75 for ARCH D color, which is lower than ours; FedEx Office and Staples color large-format is quoted per store and typically runs $10–$20 a sheet.

The way to keep color cheap is to not print the whole set in color. Most plan sets have two to five sheets where color carries information: a rendered elevation, a site plan with colored zoning overlays, an MEP coordination sheet where each trade is a color, a landscape plan. Everything else — floor plans, sections, details, schedules — reads identically in black-and-white because it was drawn in black line.

So a 24-sheet set with 4 color sheets is 20 × $2.00 + 4 × $6.00 = $40 + $24 = $64, versus $144 for the whole set in color. Upload the color sheets as a separate PDF, add them as a second line item on the same order, and choose Color for that item only. One box, one tracking number, one invoice.

Take a typical commercial bid: 40 ARCH D sheets per set, eight bidders, each set stapled, each shipped to a different GC's office. That's 320 sheets.

Printing: 320 × $2.00 = $640, minus 10% volume discount ($64) = $576. Stapling: 8 sets × $0.50 = $4. Print total $580.

Shipping: the first address is free because the order is over $100; each additional address is $15 on UPS Ground. Seven extra addresses = $105. Delivered total: $685, every box with its own tracking number and a packing slip listing what's inside. You enter the eight addresses on the order page; nobody emails a spreadsheet back and forth.

Add a 150-page letter-size project manual, coil-bound, to each set: 1,200 pages × $0.10 = $120, minus 10% = $108, plus 8 × $6.00 binding = $48 → $156. Grand total with manuals: $841 shipped to eight addresses.

The same 320 sheets at FedEx Office are $2,236.80 before stapling, and you'd be boxing and shipping eight parcels yourself. At Staples, $1,440. Plans4Less would be $560 on paper; they offer multi-location shipping too, at their carrier rates per address.

Accordion folding to 8.5×11 with the title block facing out is $0.50 per sheet. Half-fold (one fold, to 12×18 for an ARCH D sheet) is $0.25 per sheet. 3-hole punch is $0.25 per sheet. Stapling is $0.50 per set and coil binding is $6.00 per set.

On a 24-sheet set, full folding adds $12 to a $48 print — 25% more. On three copies (72 sheets, discounted print $129.60) it adds $36 for a total of $165.60. Note the volume discount applies to printing, not finishing.

When it's worth it: any set going to a building department (most NJ construction offices want folded sets that fit a file drawer), any set a field super will carry in a truck door, and any set going into a binder. When it isn't: sets that will be pinned to a trailer wall or laid on a plan table — rolled is faster to work from and cheaper.

Big-box counters quote folding at $1–$2 per sheet when they offer it at all; several locations only roll. Plans4Less and Plan Express both offer folding; check their per-sheet rate at checkout.

Upload the same ARCH D PDF, choose ARCH B (12×18) and "Print at 50%." Half-size ARCH B is $0.75 per sheet in black-and-white versus $2.00 full-size — 37.5% of the price. Ledger (11×17) is $0.35 per sheet if you're happy with a slightly smaller half-size and a small margin difference.

A 24-sheet set, three copies, is $129.60 full-size or $48.60 half-size on ARCH B (plus $15 shipping since it's under $100). Many firms order both on one invoice — three full-size for the permit desk and the super, four half-size for subs, the owner, and the office — which comes to $178.20 delivered.

Half-size is acceptable for reference, pricing, coordination meetings, and owner review. It is generally not acceptable for permit submission (most NJ construction offices require full-size), for anything that needs to be scaled with a rule (a half-size ¼″=1′ plan is now ⅛″=1′, and small text becomes hard to read), or for stamped record sets.

ARCH E black-and-white is $3.50 per sheet here; full color is $9.00. FedEx Office lists $11.99 as of September 2026. Staples frequently doesn't run ARCH E in-store. Local repro shops typically land between $4.50 and $8.00.

An 18-sheet ARCH E set, two copies (36 sheets — crosses the 25-sheet threshold): 36 × $3.50 = $126, minus 10% = $113.40, shipped free. Four copies: $226.80. The FedEx equivalent for two copies is $431.64.

A note on ARCH E: it ships rolled in a heavy-wall tube, never folded — a 36×48 sheet accordion-folded to 8.5×11 is a brick. If your reviewer needs a folded set, print ARCH D at scale instead, or a half-size ARCH C (18×24) at 50%.

30×42 (sometimes called ANSI-plus or "engineering 30×42") is $3.00 per sheet in black-and-white and $8.00 in color. It's the size NJDEP, CAFRA, and most county planning boards see for site plans, and the size a lot of walk-in counters simply can't run.

A 30-sheet civil set, three copies (90 sheets): 90 × $3.00 = $270, minus 10% = $243.00, free shipping. A smaller 12-sheet set, two copies: 24 × $3.00 = $72 + $15 shipping = $87.00 delivered.

FedEx Office pricing for 30×42 is quoted per location and often falls between the D and E rates, roughly $9–$12 when available. Staples generally sends it out. Plans4Less lists a 30×42 option; check their current rate.

Engineering scales (1″=10′ through 1″=200′) are preserved exactly as long as the PDF is exported at 1:1 at 30×42 page size. We check the first sheet of every civil job with a scale rule.

Letter-size black-and-white is $0.10 per page (single-sided sheet), coil binding is $6.00 per book, and 3-hole punch is $0.25 per sheet. A 200-page project manual, six copies: 1,200 pages × $0.10 = $120, minus 10% = $108, plus 6 × $6.00 coil = $36 → $144.00, shipped free.

Order the manuals on the same invoice as the drawings and they ship in the same box (or the same boxes, for a distribution). At FedEx Office, letter-size B&W runs roughly $0.12–$0.24 per page depending on self-serve vs. full-serve plus $4–$8 per binding; the same six manuals would be roughly $170–$340. Staples is similar.

A practical note: if the manual is going into a 3-ring binder anyway, choose 3-hole punch and skip the coil; if it's a standalone document, coil is sturdier and lies flat on a plan table.

Any single line item with 25 or more sheets (sheets per set × number of sets) gets 10% off the print price, automatically, at checkout. No code, no call. It's per line item, so a 12-sheet set × 3 copies (36 sheets) qualifies; a 12-sheet set × 2 copies (24 sheets) does not — and yes, adding a third copy of that set costs $24 more in print but saves $7.20 in discount, so the third copy effectively costs $16.80.

The discount applies to the sheet price only, not to folding, stapling, or binding. It stacks with free shipping over $100.

UPS Ground is $15 flat on any order under $100 and free on orders of $100 or more. That's the whole rule. No fuel surcharges, no residential surcharges, no "handling." A 24-sheet ARCH D set ($48) ships for $15; three copies ($129.60) ship free.

Most online printers charge carrier rates calculated at checkout, which for a rolled tube is typically $12–$25 by Ground within the Northeast and more for longer distances or larger tubes. Plans4Less offers a PRIME membership at $95 a year that waives shipping; whether that pays off depends on how many sub-$100 orders you place. If you place mostly full sets, our free-over-$100 rule gives you the same outcome without the membership.

You need it when the destination is outside our next-day Ground zone (New England, Virginia and south, western PA, or anywhere west) and the deadline is tomorrow. You don't need it for New Jersey, New York City, Long Island, eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, or most of Maryland — Ground already gets there next business day from Cape May County, and Ground is $15 or free.

A 24-sheet set overnighted is $48 + $45 = $93. Three copies: $129.60 + $45 = $174.60. Compare that with a same-day walk-in at FedEx Office for three copies: $503.28. Overnighting from us is still a third of the counter price and you didn't leave the office.

No, no, no, and no. Our same-day-ship turnaround is the standard turnaround, not a paid upgrade; there is no rush fee. There is no per-file setup or "processing" fee. There is no minimum order — a single $2.00 sheet is a valid order. The price you see on the pricing table plus the shipping rule is the invoice.

What to watch for elsewhere: some online printers list a low per-sheet price and add a $5–$10 per-file setup fee, which on a single-file 24-sheet order adds 20–40% to the real cost. Several local reprographics shops have a $10–$25 minimum. Some shops charge $15–$25 for "same-day" as a rush tier. Big-box counters usually quote a clean per-sheet price but that price is already 2–3.5× ours.

The one thing that legitimately costs extra everywhere, including here, is finishing: folding, punching, stapling, binding. Ours is on the pricing table and on this page, per unit.

The alternative most supers reach for is FedEx Office on the way to the site: $6.99 × 30 = $209.70 for that same field set, in hand in an hour or two if the store's plotter is free. That's the right call if the crew is standing around. It's the wrong call if the set is needed tomorrow morning, which is most of the time.

100 ARCH D sheets, black-and-white, in any combination of sets that adds up to 100 on one line item: 100 × $2.00 = $200, minus 10% = $180.00, shipped free. That could be a 50-sheet set × 2, a 25-sheet set × 4, or one 100-sheet archive print.

At FedEx Office, 100 ARCH D sheets are $699. At Staples, $450. Plans4Less is $175 before shipping — five dollars less than us on print, roughly even or slightly more once their carrier shipping is added. A local repro shop at $3 a sheet is $300.

At this volume it's worth an email. Firms that consistently order 100+ sheets a month get a custom rate sheet from us; tell us what you print and how often.

A rough model for a 3–6 person residential/light-commercial firm: two permit submissions a month (24 sheets × 3 copies each), one bid set distribution every other month (36 sheets × 6 sets), a handful of progress and field reprints (say 40 loose sheets), and one half-size review set per project.

At our prices: 2 permit sets = 2 × $129.60 = $259.20; half a bid distribution per month = ($388.80 + $75 shipping to 6 addresses) ÷ 2 ≈ $232; 40 loose sheets = $72 after discount; two half-size sets (24 sheets ARCH B) = $36 + shipping. Call it $600–$650 a month, shipped.

The same workload — about 340 sheets a month — is roughly $1,500–$1,800 at Staples prices and $2,100–$2,400 at FedEx Office prices, plus 8–12 trips. At a local repro shop at $3.50 a sheet, about $1,200. This is the difference between printing being a rounding error and printing being a line item someone at the firm has to manage.

Our online catalogue is 20# bond, black-and-white or color, because that's what permit desks, bidders, and field crews expect and it keeps the price low. Heavier bond (24#/28#), vellum, mylar, and mounted or laminated prints are handled as quote-based specialty jobs — email the sheet size, count, and substrate and we'll price it same day.

For budgeting: across the industry, 24# bond typically runs 15–30% over 20#, vellum roughly 3–5× the 20# price, and mylar 6–10×. A single ARCH D on mylar at most shops is in the $15–$25 range. Big-box counters generally don't stock vellum or mylar at all.

The practical advice: almost nothing needs to be on anything other than 20# bond. Record sets for an owner's archive and originals that will be marked up and reproduced repeatedly are the two legitimate cases for vellum or mylar. Everything else — permit, bid, field — is 20#.

It depends entirely on how many sub-$100 orders you place. Plans4Less PRIME costs $95 a year and waives shipping on every order. Our rule is free Ground on any order of $100 or more and $15 flat below that, no membership.

If a firm places, say, four small orders a month under $100 — a 12-sheet set here, a 6-sheet reprint there — that's 48 orders × $15 = $720 a year in shipping with us, and a membership somewhere else clearly pays. But most firms don't order that way. Most order full sets and distributions, which clear $100 and ship free here. If two-thirds of your orders are over $100 and you place 3 a month, you'd pay 12 × $15 = $180 a year in shipping with us versus $95 for a membership plus whatever the per-sheet difference works out to.

The simplest way to beat any membership: batch the small stuff. Hold the 6-sheet reprint until the permit set goes out, and both ship free.
