How to prep a PDF for ARCH D blueprint printing (without losing scale)
If your blueprint prints come back at 22½ × 33¾ instead of 24 × 36, it almost never has anything to do with the print shop. It has to do with three settings in the PDF export dialog of the software you used to generate the file. Here’s what’s actually happening, and how to make sure your next plan set lands at the right size on the first try.
We print hundreds of ARCH D sheets a week at East Coast Blueprints. About one in fifteen incoming PDFs has a scale issue we have to flag back to the customer. Almost all of those trace back to the same handful of mistakes.
What “ARCH D at scale” actually means
ARCH D is 24 inches by 36 inches. A plot of a floor plan at ¼ inch = 1 foot on an ARCH D sheet shows up to about 96 feet of building width on the long edge, accounting for the title block. When your CAD or BIM software exports a PDF, that PDF has a defined “page size” — and the plotter respects that page size literally. If the PDF page size is 22.5 × 33.75, you get a 22.5 × 33.75 print. The plotter does not assume you meant 24 × 36 and resize for you.
That’s the foundation: the PDF page size must equal the sheet size you ordered.
The three settings that break scale
1. Page size in the export dialog. When you plot from AutoCAD, Revit, ArchiCAD, or Bluebeam, the dialog asks for a sheet size. Pick the one that matches what you’re printing — ARCH D for ARCH D, ARCH E for ARCH E, “Oversized” or “Custom” for 30×42. If your dialog defaults to ANSI D (22×34) and you accept it, you’ve already lost scale. ANSI D and ARCH D are different sizes despite both having a “D” in the name.
2. “Fit to page” or “scale to printable area.” Every export dialog has a checkbox that says some version of “shrink or fit content to printable area.” Uncheck it. If it’s checked, the software shrinks your drawing by about 5% to leave a printer margin — and now your ¼” = 1’ scale is actually 0.238” = 1’. Reviewers and contractors who measure with a scale rule will catch it.
3. The plot scale itself. In AutoCAD’s plot dialog, set “Plot scale” to 1:1 with “Fit to paper” unchecked. Your viewports already define the scale of each drawing — the plot output should be 1:1 of the paper-space layout. Revit handles this through the sheet itself; just confirm “Zoom: 100%” and “Fit to page” is off.
A 30-second sanity check before you upload
Open the PDF in any reader. In Acrobat: File → Properties → Description. Look at “Page size.”
- 24 × 36 in = ARCH D, correct
- 22.5 × 33.75 = scaled down 6%, will print wrong
- 22 × 34 = ANSI D, not ARCH D
- 36 × 48 = ARCH E, correct
- 30 × 42 = engineering, correct
- 8.5 × 11 or 11 × 17 = a thumbnail, not a printable plan
If the number doesn’t match the sheet size you’re ordering, re-export. Don’t “fix it” by ordering a smaller size to match the PDF — the scale on your drawings is now wrong and you’ll catch it on the jobsite, which is far more expensive than re-exporting.
Mixed sheet sizes in one set
It’s common for a plan set to mix sizes — architectural sheets at ARCH D, civil sheets at 30×42, ANSI B detail sheets. When that happens, upload a separate PDF per size as separate line items. Put the size in the filename (project-architectural-ARCH-D.pdf, project-civil-30x42.pdf) so the order is unambiguous.
Fonts, layers, and “why does my title block look weird?”
Embed your fonts. Choose “embed all fonts” on export. If a font isn’t embedded, the plotter substitutes a default and your title block, scale notations, and stamp text shift visually.
Flatten transparencies and layers. Highly layered PDFs with transparency effects can render unpredictably. If your tool offers “flatten” on export, take it.
Color management
For black-and-white plotting, color management is irrelevant. For full color: export with sRGB, not Adobe RGB or CMYK. If renderings come back muted or yellow-shifted, the file was probably exported in CMYK or a wide-gamut profile.

If a job is high-stakes — a permit set that has to land Friday, a 60-sheet bid distribution to 12 subs — order a single sheet first. Bottom line
A correctly prepped PDF for ARCH D has one job: be a PDF whose page size is exactly 24 × 36 inches, exported at 1:1, with “fit to page” off, fonts embedded, layers flattened. Get those right and the print shop becomes the part of the workflow you stop worrying about.
