Why does the same 24×36 sheet cost $1.75 at one shop and $6.99 at another?
A black-and-white ARCH D sheet on 20# bond is the same product everywhere: 24×36 inches, a few cents of paper, a small amount of pigment ink, 30 seconds on a plotter. Yet it’s $1.75 at Plans4Less, $2.00 here, $2.50–$5.00 at a local reprographics shop, $4.50 at Staples, and $6.99 at FedEx Office. That’s a 4× spread on an identical sheet. Here’s where it comes from.
What the sheet actually costs to make
Roughly, for a shop running a modern wide-format inkjet plotter:

So even the cheapest online price has a reasonable margin in it. The rest of the spread is overhead and business model.
Where the extra $5 goes at a big-box counter
Retail rent. A FedEx Office or Staples is in a strip center or on a main road, paying retail rent for square footage that’s mostly devoted to letter-size copies, shipping counters, and office supplies. The plotter in the back has to earn its share of that rent on a small number of sheets.
Low large-format volume. A big-box store may plot a few dozen large sheets a week. There’s no efficiency in that; each job is a setup. A specialist plotting hundreds a day runs them back to back.
General staffing. The associate at the counter does everything. Large-format is a sideline, priced as a premium service because it interrupts everything else.
Immediacy. You can walk out with the sheet. That’s a real service and it costs something to be ready to provide it.
Where a local repro shop sits
$2.50–$5.00 is the range because local repro shops are all different. The old-line blueprint shops with a loyal architect base tend to sit in the upper half; they know the work, they’ll fix a file, they deliver locally, and they’ve priced that in. Newer shops competing with online prices sit lower. Most have minimum orders ($10–$25) because a one-sheet walk-in costs them more in counter time than it earns.
Why online specialists are cheapest
No retail rent. The plotter is in a production space, not a storefront.
Only this. A shop that does nothing but plan sets runs its plotter continuously, buys paper and ink by the pallet, and has a workflow tuned for exactly one thing.
The customer does the setup. You upload a PDF that’s already at the right page size, you pick the sheet and the count, you pay. Nobody at a counter is translating “I need, like, three of these but the site plan bigger.”
Shipping replaces the storefront. UPS Ground is a fixed, predictable cost, and it lets a shop in Cape May County serve Manhattan and Philadelphia without a storefront in either.
What the price differences mean for you
At $6.99 you’re paying for immediacy and a location on your route. Fair price for one sheet you need in an hour; a poor one for a 24-sheet set.
At $4.50 you’re paying for a counter that treats large-format as an ordinary copy job. Fine for ledger and letter; usually can’t do ARCH E or 30×42 in-store.
At $2.50–$5.00 you’re paying a specialist who’s local, will pick up the phone, and may deliver. Worth it if you value the relationship and they’re good.
At $1.75–$2.00 you’re paying for the sheet and not much else — which is what most sets need. The difference between shops in this band is cutoff time, geography, shipping model, and whether a person answers.
