East Coast Blueprints vs printing plans on your own plotter

Short version: A plotter in the office is the right answer for check prints and one-offs all day long. It is usually the wrong answer for sets: by the time ink, paper, the service plan and the person standing at the machine are counted, a 24×36 sheet costs more than $2.00, and a 50-sheet set in three copies takes someone an hour. We do the sets; keep the plotter for the check prints.

The honest framing

Most firms that print plans own a plotter, and they should. A 36-inch inkjet on the floor is the right tool for the check print, the red-line review, the one sheet somebody needs before a meeting. We are not trying to replace it.

The question is what the plotter should not be doing: the 50-sheet set in three copies for the permit desk, the eight bid sets, the reprint of a revised set to every sub. Those jobs cost a staff hour each, tie up the machine, and quietly cost more per sheet than ordering them.

What a sheet costs in-house

The ink and paper are cheap for line work — a few tens of cents on a 24×36. What makes the real number is everything else: the service plan and printheads, the lease or purchase spread over the sheets actually printed, and the person feeding, trimming, collating and stapling. Costed honestly, firms land between $1.50 and $4.00 a sheet for sets, plus the hour.

Renderings are the other case. Full-coverage color on a wide-format inkjet runs roughly $0.25–$0.70 per square foot in ink by HP’s own cost-per-print guidance — $1.50–$4.00 of ink on a single 24×36 before paper and time. That is why our heavy-coverage rate exists and why a rendering is a good thing to send out. Printed in black-and-white, a rendering that covers a large part of the sheet bills at our B&W heavy-coverage rate, $3.95 a 24×36.

Where the plotter wins

Anything you need in the next hour. One sheet. Mark-ups. Drafts that will change again tomorrow.

Where we win

Sets. $2.00 a sheet, 10–20% off at volume, collated and stapled, folded if you want, shipped the same day you order by noon Eastern and delivered the next business morning anywhere from New York to Washington DC — to up to 20 addresses on one order. The plotter stays free for the check prints, and nobody spends the afternoon collating.

Frequently asked questions

What does an in-house sheet really cost?

Line-work ink and 20# bond are cheap per sheet — well under a dollar. The real costs are the service plan, printheads, the lease or depreciation, and the person running the job and collating the sets. Firms that cost it honestly land somewhere between $1.50 and $4 a sheet for sets, before the staff hour.

When should a firm keep its plotter?

Always, if it already has one — for check prints, red-line reviews, single sheets and the 4 PM 'print me the site plan'. Send the sets out; that's where the time goes.

Can you match the turnaround of printing it here?

For a set you need in an hour, no. For a set you need tomorrow morning, yes — order by noon Eastern and it's delivered next business day across the corridor from New York to Washington DC, collated and stapled, without tying up the machine or the person.
