The wrong way to decide
Most firms pick one and stick with it. The walk-in loyalists overpay on every routine set. The online-only crowd panics when the client wants three sheets by 3 PM. Neither is optimal.
The right way: route by job
Use walk-in when:
- You need the print in the next few hours
- It’s one to five sheets and the shop is close
- You want to inspect a color rendering before you pay
- The job needs scanning, mounting, or graphics
Use online when:
- The set can arrive tomorrow morning or later (most permit and bid sets)
- It’s going to a job site, a building department, or a sub — not your office
- It’s more than ~10 sheets and the price gap matters
- You’ll reorder the same file later
- You want the same result every time, not “depends who’s working the counter”
What “tomorrow morning” actually means
The hesitation about online printing is almost always about speed. The real question is whether next-business-morning is fast enough, and for most of a firm’s printing it is. Permit sets are scheduled. Bid distributions are scheduled. Field sets are scheduled. The genuinely unscheduled print — the 2 PM “we need this for the 4 PM meeting” — is rare, and it’s the one job the walk-in counter is built for.
Order by noon ET and we ship the same day via UPS. Next business day to NJ, NY, PA, DE, and most of MD. That covers the scheduled 90% at a third of the cost.

Is online blueprint printing reliable enough for permit deadlines?
Yes, if you plan one day ahead. Order by noon ET Monday, the set is on your desk Tuesday morning via UPS Ground across NJ, NY, PA, DE, and most of MD. For a Friday deadline, order Wednesday and you have a full day of margin. The failure mode is ordering the day-of and hoping — that's what walk-in is for.
How much cheaper is online?
Roughly half to a third of big-box walk-in pricing. An ARCH D sheet runs $2.00 with us versus about $4.50–$7.00 at national chains. On a 24-sheet set that's $48 versus $108–$168.
What about the shipping cost?
Ours is $15 flat by UPS Ground and free over $100. Most permit and bid sets clear $100, so effective shipping is zero. Factor in the drive, parking, and 45 minutes at a counter, and the walk-in 'free' isn't free.
Can I trust the scale from an online printer?
Scale is a property of your PDF, not the counter. If the file is exported at 1:1 at the correct page size, any calibrated plotter prints it at scale. We check the first sheet of every job with a scale rule, and with no minimum order you can test us with a single $2.00 sheet before trusting us with a deadline.
