Can I print blueprints at home?
Only small ones. Most home and office printers top out at 8.5×11 or 11×17, so you can print a reduced, not-to-scale copy at home, but a full-size 24×36 or 30×42 sheet needs a wide-format plotter at least 24 inches wide. Sending the PDF out costs $2.00 a 24×36 sheet with East Coast Blueprints, shipped the same day if ordered by noon Eastern.
What works at home. An 11×17 printer gives you a half-size reference copy that is fine for reading a plan at the kitchen table. It is not to scale, so dimensions cannot be measured off it with a scale ruler, and most permit counters will not accept it in place of full-size sheets.
Tiling is a trap. Printing a 24×36 sheet as eight letter pages and taping them together gives you misaligned seams and a sheet that is no longer to scale. It is fine for a rough look, not for anything someone will build from.
When a plotter makes sense. Firms printing hundreds of sheets a month sometimes buy a 24- or 36-inch plotter. Below that volume, the plotter, ink, paper and service usually cost more per sheet than sending the file out. See our plotter cost comparison.
